Health-conscious consumers continue to use sugar substitutes to enhance and sweeten their snacks, drinks, desserts, condiments and more.
An alternative sugar that appears in a growing number of natural product formulations is allulose, an ingredient that saw a 164.2% increase in sales and a $400 million market growth, according to a SPINS analysis of traditional and natural improvement channels. 52 weeks to June 12, 2022
Favored by formulators and consumers for its mild flavor and pleasant mouthfeel, Allulose is found naturally in fruit and is virtually calorie-free. This promising sugar substitute not only inspires sweet recipes, but also goes beyond sweet tooth cravings. It can now be found in categories such as spreads, dressings and other condiments, although often combined with other sugar substitutes.
However, despite its growing popularity, New Hope consumer research shows that allulose still has a long way to go in terms of consumer acceptance. In an April 26 survey of 1,000 consumers by the New Hope Network’s NEXT Data and Insights team, supported by research platform Suzy, only 16% said they considered allulose a “natural” sweetener, compared to 46% for stevia and 61%. % for Monk Fruit stevia, which 45% of respondents have never heard of.
However, as more products containing allulose become available, there will be more opportunities for consumers to discover the versatility of this more natural sweetener.
